Guidelines for the Submission of Short Papers
1. Qualification for submission
Only regular members of ARAFE qualify as authors. Non-members may be co-authors, but they cannot be first and/or corresponding authors. The authors of short papers must submit pre-submission manuscripts and make their oral presentations at the ARAFE Annual Meeting of the current year. Payment of membership fees up to the year of publication (including the year of publication) is a requisite for publication. The submitted manuscript will not be accepted for consideration without confirmation of payment.
2. Pre-submission manuscripts
Authors must send pre-submission manuscripts to both the chair of their oral presentations and the editorial board of ARAFE by the deadline announced at the ARAFE Annual Meeting. Authors should make their oral presentations based on their pre-submission manuscripts. Pre-submission manuscripts should be prepared using the template file for short papers on the ARAFE website.
3. Manuscripts
Manuscripts should be prepared in accordance with sections 4 to 6. If a manuscript has been made without using the template file for short papers or the manuscript format is clearly invalid, the submission will not be accepted for consideration.
4. Preparation of main text and summary
(1) The text of manuscripts should be written horizontally. In Japanese manuscripts, the modern kana usage and Chinese characters for daily use should be used except for specialized terminology. Submitted manuscripts must be prepared using the template file for short papers after confirming that the document, including the summary and figures, amounts to eight pages or less. Manuscripts with nine or more pages will not be accepted for consideration.
(2) In Japanese manuscripts, the title, authors’ names, and affiliations in both Japanese and English should be written in the designated locations in the template file for short papers. When submitting a manuscript as a short paper, a summary in English (approximately 150 words) and 4–6 keywords in Japanese should be written in the designated location in the template file for short papers. Japanese manuscripts with incomplete English summaries will not be accepted for consideration.
(3) In English manuscripts, the title, authors’ names, and affiliations should be written in English in the designated locations in the template file for short papers. When submitting a manuscript as a short paper, a summary in English (approximately 150 words) and 4–6 keywords in English should also be written in the designated location in the template file for short papers. English manuscripts with incomplete English summaries will not be accepted for consideration.
5. Preparation of figures and tables
Figures and tables should be consecutively numbered throughout the manuscript as follows: Fig. 1, Table 1. Figures and tables should be affixed in the required locations in all manuscripts. Figures should always be accurate and clear and have suitable explanations and symbols appended. To ensure readability, do not excessively reduce the sizes of figures and tables.
6. Description of notes and citations
The article structure, punctuation marks, units, notes, citations, and reference list should be prepared in accordance with the technical guidelines for submission to the Journal of Rural Problems.
7. Submission of manuscripts
Authors should submit the following electronic files to the editorial board of ARAFE in accordance with the procedures outlined on the ARAFE website. Manuscripts submitted after the designated deadline will not be accepted under any circumstances.
■ List of items to be submitted
① Both a PDF file and Word file of the manuscript
② A PDF file of the article written by any of the authors most closely related to the manuscript (if needed when notifying of a double submission survey)
8. Review
A manuscript submitted as a short paper will be reviewed by two or more board members. The final decision on whether a manuscript is accepted is made by the executive editorial board of ARAFE. A manuscript will generally be reviewed up to three times; one that is not accepted by the third review will be rejected.
9. Proofreading
The author’s proofreading process, wherein authors may correct any printing mistakes, is performed only once. However, the following are not allowed: correction of words and phrases unrelated to printing mistakes, the addition of new words and phrases, and any correction of figures and tables.
10. Issue number
Short papers will be published in issues of the Journal of Rural Problems the year after the current ARAFE Annual Meeting.
11. Publication fees
When manuscripts are accepted for publication, authors must pay the publication fees per manuscript listed below. However, the winners of the Short Paper Excellence Award will be exempt from paying this fee. Publication fees are reviewed every two years. When Japanese manuscripts are accepted, authors must pay ¥2,500 per manuscript as the editing fee for an English summary (consigned collectively by the editorial board to an outsourced provider).
■ List of publication fees
6 pages or less: ¥40,000
7 pages: ¥45,000
8 pages: ¥50,000
*The maximum number of pages at the submission stage is eight but up to nine printed pages are permitted after typesetting. In this case, the publication fee is ¥55,000.
12. Ownership and use of copyright
Based on the copyright policy of ARAFE, the copyright of short papers is transferred to ARAFE. The transfer of copyright includes the assignment of rights to reproduce, distribute, display, and store the published articles in both print and electronic forms.
13. Revision of Guidelines
The guidelines shall be revised by the editorial board of ARAFE. The revision must be approved by the Board of Executive Directors.
