Concept of the Symposium
In the recent decades, sustainability of agriculture, rural communities, and ecosystems face significant challenges under climate change, globalization, urbanization, and environmental degradation. To respond to this crisis of agri-food system as well as the whole society, the governments, business circle, and grassroots farmers’ and civil society movements promote alternative solutions in different ways such as agroecology, climate smart agriculture, carbon farming, precision agriculture. The Authorities of Japan, the US, and EU declared their new strategies to transform the current agri-food system to be ecologically, socially, and economically sustainable between 2019-2021. The World Food System Summit of 2021 is a part of these initiatives. However, the global farmers’ and civil society groups firmly contest the way in which these initiatives promote and claim that ecological farming and localized food systems and associated traditional knowledge of farmers, including small-scale family farmers and indigenous peoples, deserve to be placed in the center of the debates.
To learn from the global trends of latest research, this workshop invites three experts of agroecology, small-scale farmers and organic farming, and Climate Smart Agriculture to present the concepts, related studies, policies, debates, and controversies. Dwelling on their rich research experiences in different disciplines: agronomy, agricultural economics, and political economy and sociology of agriculture and food, we invite participants to get involved in inter-disciplinary debates. The symposium is the first round of two consecutive symposiums to be held from 2021 to 2022 while the former focusses on the global trends, the latter focusses on local realities.
